Ras Al Khaimah Government Structure
The government is ruled by the Sheikh, currently Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi. Within, there are several departments and public authorities that oversee and handle all issues and development of the area. Most of the departments have goals to modernize and maximize in a sustainable way. Also, most of the departments are relatively new, initiated in the mid the 20th century to very early 2000’s.
This department is widely recognized as one of the earliest government authorities in Ras Al Khaimah. The Customs Department applies United Arab Emirate laws and statutes concerning customs work and customs policies. It also handles trade policies, works to eliminate trade barriers, combats fraud such as counterfeit monies and money laundering, and works to minimize smuggling. Lastly, it keeps track of importation of restricted materials and works to control prohibited materials.
Environment Protection and Development Authority
In March 2007 the EPDA of Ras Al Khaimah was formed as the sole authority of all environmental issues in the emirate. This department is under the rule of the crown prince as well as the ruler of the emirate, but maintains its autonomy.
Department of Economic Development
Considered to be one of the pillars of importance to the government of Ras Al Khaimah, this department maintains the emirate’s economy for sustainable development. Over the years, the Department of Economic Development has worked hard to modernize itself and spread its influence,and in 2010 it won an internal award for excellence, the Sheikh Saqr Government Excellence Program Award.
By working with several other government sectors, the Finance Department of Ras Al Khaimah aims to ensure the objectives of the government. This department provides financial, accounting, and advisory services in accordance with modern global financial and accounting practices. In the theme of modernity, the department also updates legislation and fiscal policies.
RAK Courts Department
This department applies and interprets the laws of Ras Al Khaimah in a mission to protect the rights of the community. It also seeks to contribute to the overall vision of the government by providing legislative infrastructure and a modern governance system. It includes the Court of First Instance, the Court of Appeals and the Court of Cassation.
RAK Educational Zone
In 1955 educational reform in Ras Al Khaimah began. At the start of the reform, the RAK Knowledge Department was the supervising body of the movement, but in 1964 the responsibility changed hands to the Arabian Gulf and South Public Authority. In 1972 that department was merged with the Ministry of Education on the United Arab Emirate. Edging towards modern times, the department was renamed the RAK Education Zone in 1980 and the department was firmly within the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah.
