It may not seem like it, but visit the desert areas of Ras Al Khaimah at the right time and you’ll find them full of people celebrating. The emirate is widely known for its many festivals and cultural events that attract people from all over the world.
Guinness World Record for Fireworks
One of the biggest New Year’s Eve displays in the United Arab Emirates took place on Al Marjan Island in Ras Al Khaimah. The emirate set the Guinness World Record for “largest aerial firework shell” with His Highness Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi looking on.
This festival highlights social, cultural, and traditional pieces of Ras Al Khaimah. Every year tourists and local alike congregate in the Awafi Desert area for the most anticipated event in Ras Al Khaimah. There is a motoring event and a large “heritage village” which is partitioned by differing cultural aspects of the United Arab Emirates. Some areas sell foods and crafts, all in the traditional style of the emirate where they originate. Some sections are designed to appear like the geographical region they hail from, such as a mountain or coastal village.
The event is lengthy, lasting three weeks during the peak of tourist season. Attendance is free of charge, and any area of the festival can be walked to or driven to if you have a vehicle that can handle the desert terrain. If you’re not one with an appropriate vehicle, rentals are available in nearly areas.
The Awafi desert event isn’t the only intriguing festival held in Ras Al Khaimah. Many different types of events are hosted there, and most of them have ties to the local heritage and culture of the inhabitants and their ancestors.
