It’s no surprise that many celebrities hail from the United Arab Emirates. It’s inspiring landscape and intriguing people are obvious sources of creativity and motivation. A brief look at some of the achievements of these people will help to get an idea of the culture of the emirates.
Ahlam is a singer from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. She has released ten albums, two of which were wildly popular. In 2006 she released El Thokol Sana’a, and in 2009 the successful album Hatha Ana. Aside from her albums, she is also a television personality. She was featured on Arab Idol and the controversial reality show The Queen.
Ahmad Al Maktoum
At the 2004 Athens olympics Ahmad Al Maktoum won the first gold medal for his country, the United Arab Emirates. He accomplished this feat in the double trap event in shooting. Aside from being a fantastic shooter and a former squash champion, he is also cousin to the current emir of Dubai.
Ahmad ibn Mājid
Ahmad ibn Majid is known as the very first Arab seaman, although he inherited his profession from his father and grandfather, and he was widely known during his time as the lion of the sea. He wrote much on the subjects of astronomy and maritime navigation, as well as poetry, contributing at least 38 works in his lifetime, of which 25 are extant.
Elham Al Qasim
An investment professional with degrees in Business and Marketing as well as Management, this emirati woman was the first Arab woman to reach the North Pole and the first United Arab Emirate national overall. To add to the impressiveness of this feat, she did so unsupported and unassisted, meaning with her own two legs and arms and heart.
Abdul Qader Al Rais
One of the most influential artists in the United Arab Emirates, Abdul Qader Al Rais hails from Dubai. He has contributed much to the art scene there with his landscape and architectural scenes inspired by traditional emirati neighbourhoods. His art is featured in palaces and public spaces alike, allowing them to reach a broad audience.
Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi
The current emir of Sharjah and a member of the Al Qasimi dynasty, Sheikh Sultan, is also deeply educated with a Bachelor of Science in agricultural engineering, and two doctorates in history and political geography. He has written several books, and serves in multiple educational posts for his emirate where he puts a focus on education.
